Our 7-Day Mexico Itinerary (What We Loved + What We’d Skip)

🌴 Our 7-Day Rocky Point Itinerary

(What We Loved + What We’d Skip)

We recently spent 7 days in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), anchored on Sandy Beach in a beachfront condo—and it delivered exactly what we were looking for: sun, slow mornings, and just enough adventure to keep things interesting.

If you’re charting a course for your own trip, here’s how ours played out—what we’d do again in a heartbeat, and what we’d leave behind next time.

🌊 Day 1: Arrival & Getting Our Bearings

We pulled into town, checked into our Sandy Beach condo, and made a beeline straight for the water.

What we loved:

  • That first ocean view—it never gets old
  • How quickly the stress of everyday life drifted away

What we’d skip:

  • Waiting too long to provision
👉 Next time, we’d grab groceries before checking in so we could settle in without needing to head back out.

☀️ Day 2: Poolside Day

No alarms, no plans—just going where the day took us.

What we loved:

  • Coffee on the balcony with the ocean as our backdrop
  • Walked the beach in the morning, low-tide amazing
  • Easy back-and-forth between pool and pool bar
  • Letting the day unfold naturally
  • Nachos poolside

What we’d skip:

  • Heading down empty-handed
👉 Bring snacks, drinks, and settle in—you won’t want to leave your spot
  • We didn’t bring shade for the beach
👉 Get an Easy-up and set-up on the beach

🐟 Day 3: Old Port (Malecon) Exploration

We set course for the Malecon, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip.

What we loved:

  • The energy—music in the air, shops buzzing, restaurants
  • Fresh shrimp tacos that lived up to the hype
  • Wandering without a strict plan

What we’d skip:

  • Going at peak midday heat
👉 Next time, we’d arrive later and stay through sunset when everything comes alive.

🚤 Day 4: Golfing

Time to trade relaxation for a bit of movement.

What we loved:

  • Getting off the beach and seeing a different side of Rocky Point
  • That mix of sea air, desert landscape, and fresh cut grass
  • Afterwards, fish tacos for lunch at Banditos…yes, please!!!
  • A little more pool time
  • Grilling steaks on the Balcony

What we’d skip:

  • The steaks were good, but we’re on the ocean…shrimp/fish on the grill next time
👉 We found a great fish monger…Jessie’s Market.

🌮 Day 5: Following the Food

This day turned into a bit of a culinary treasure hunt—and we weren’t mad about it. We talked with locals about where to go for Campechana, oysters, steaks, breakfast and Italian—we found Mexican food in Salerno, Italy because that’s how you roll when you marry an Italian!

What we loved:

  • Discovering local spots: Puesta Del Sol, Banditos,
  • Empanadas with pineapple on the beach
  • Fresh seafood, street tacos, and everything in between
  • Letting our appetite lead the way

What we’d skip:

  • Honestly, nothing
👉 Some of the best finds happen when you’re not overthinking it.

🧘 Day 6: Slow It All Down

By now, we’d found our rhythm—and leaned all the way into it.

What we loved:

  • A slower pace with no agenda
  • Long stretches of beach time
  • A quiet night in with the sound of the ocean

What we’d skip:

  • Saving all the downtime for the end
👉 Next time, we’d sprinkle more of this throughout the trip.

🌅 Day 7: One Last Look

We kept the final morning simple—coffee, a walk along the shore, and a slow departure.

What we loved:

  • Not rushing out the door
  • Taking in those last ocean views in a palapa on the beach

💡 Overall Thoughts

Rocky Point is about as easy as it gets for a beach escape—especially if you’re within driving distance.

What makes it worth the trip:

  • No airports, no long travel days, it’s about 4.5hrs drive from Phoenix
  • A laid-back pace that’s easy to settle into: beach, dunes, golf
  • Just enough to do without feeling overrun

⚠️ What We’d Do Differently Next Time

  • Provision before arrival – Walmart, SAMS Club, Super Ley, Jessie’s Market
  • Keep plans loose (not every day needs an itinerary)
  • Head to the Malecon later in the day
  • Build in more slow, unplanned time

🌊 Would We Go Back?

Without hesitation…maybe multiple times a year

It’s the kind of place you can return to again and again—each time a little more dialed in, a little more relaxed.
